We have been working hard over the last several months to perfect our menu and recipes, our decor and atmosphere and we are thrilled to share it with you.
It was the height of classic Americana and Detroit was putting a lot of things on the map, while names like Cadillac and Ford will go down with the greats; its Gus Guerra’s iconic pizza pie that has inspired us to create Woodward Pizza Co.
In 1946 while many industries were thriving and innovation was coming from every corner of the city Gus Guerra was making his mark on the corner of Conant and Six Mile. He created the 1st Detroit style pizza, enlisting the help of his wife, Anna, who made the special pizza dough drawing on the recipes of her mother’s Sicilian ancestry.
In a city full of movers and shakers Gus took his chance and turned the traditional pizza into his own by first lining the dough with a layer of pepperoni then a generous layer of cheese, and topping it all off with a thick drizzle of red sauce. Then baking it in a blue steel pan (gifted to him by a friend in the automotive business) And so was born the original authentic Detroit-style pizza.
From the squared blue steel pan and deck oven baking to the edge to edge cheese and the red sauce on top we are thrilled to serve you a true slice of Detroit-style pizza in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
